The Big D

Today on the way home from school, Isabel was asking questions about death and dying. Being the calm, reasonable mother I am, I answered them truthfully in a way that I think a five year old could understand. She wanted to know why Kyle's grandfather had died, what exactly made people die, and whether everything dies. She seemed satisfied with my answers and I was pleased with the way I handled it. I didn't freak out or scare her, I told her the truth, A+ effort for me! (In case you're taking notes, the abridged version of my answers were: because he was very old, because when we're very old our bodies run out of juice like batteries, and yes. I may have even used the phrase "circle of life").

She threw me the curveball while we watched Dancing With the Stars. "Mommy," she asked sweetly while watching some D-list celebrity do the cha cha, "why does Jesus want us to die?"

So much for the A+. Gonna have to give myself a C- on this one.
